Are Unaccompanied Minors Safe on a Plane?

When my children were younger, they often flew unaccompanied (beginning at ages 7 & 9) to Portland, Ore from Southern California to visit their father. Southwest was the airline of choice. They have very good security and a flight attendant always accompanied them on and off the airplane.
